A UP Nurse at the UN: Monina Hernandez on Thinking and Acting Globally

Monina Hernandez, UPNAAI’s 2025 Julita V. Sotejo Medallion of Honor Awardee, recently published an influential article in Sigma Nursing that shines a spotlight on the expanding global footprint of the nursing profession. Drawing from her experience as a Sigma nurse and UN Global Diplomacy Fellow, Hernandez illustrates how nurses contribute far beyond clinical settings—informing international policy discussions on antimicrobial resistance, ethical recruitment, climate‑related health threats, and health equity. Her article, “Thinking Globally, Acting Globally,” underscores how nurses bring scientific expertise, cultural understanding, and frontline insight to some of the world’s most urgent health challenges, making them indispensable partners in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.

Hernandez’s reflections serve not only as a testament to the growing influence of Filipino and UP‑trained nurses on the world stage, but also as an invitation for nurses everywhere to embrace their role as global advocates and changemakers. She emphasizes that the profession’s unique blend of compassion, critical thinking, and lived experience positions nurses to shape conversations that impact populations across borders. For UPNAAI, her work exemplifies the leadership, excellence, and service that define the UP nursing community—showing how one nurse’s voice can help move global health forward and inspiring others to step confidently into spaces where their expertise is urgently needed.
