Monina Hernandez, UPNAAI’s 2025 Julita V. Sotejo Medallion of Honor Awardee, recently published an article in Sigma Nursing that highlights how nurses are shaping global health policy and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals. In “Thinking Globally, Acting Globally,” she draws from her experience as a Sigma nurse and UN Global Diplomacy Fellow to show how nursing expertise influences international action on antimicrobial resistance, ethical recruitment, climate related health threats, and health equity. Her piece is both a reflection and a call to action—inviting nurses everywhere to see themselves not only as clinicians, but as global changemakers whose voices matter in building a healthier, more just world.

A nationally recognized leader in Evidence Based Practice, Dr. Sanares Carreon has advanced EBP across academic and clinical systems, mentored nurse leaders, and strengthened UP PGH through her ongoing pro bono consultancy.

UPNAAI and UPCN welcomed global alumni back to the College of Nursing on April 10, 2026 for the third Balik‑Turo — a day of learning, mentorship, and community. Students enjoyed powerful talks on lifestyle medicine and interprofessional collaboration, plus a dynamic panel on evidence‑based career success.
Survey results showed 90–95% Excellent ratings, with students calling the event inspiring, relevant, and empowering. This year, UPNAAI awarded 8 Baccalaureate scholarships, 24 educational assistance grants, and raffled 18 stethoscopes, adding excitement and joy to the celebration.
Balik‑Turo continues to strengthen the bond between UP nurses worldwide and the students who will follow in their footsteps.

This year, UPNAAI proudly recognizes four exceptional UP nurses whose service, compassion, and leadership continue to uplift communities and strengthen our global alumni network. Together, these four awardees— Geraldine Kidary, Norma Yabut, Elizabeth De Leon Gamboa, and Wilhelmina Ungco—represent the breadth of UP Nursing’s global impact. Their achievements in clinical practice, humanitarian service, governance, and organizational leadership reflect the values of excellence, integrity, and service that define the UP nurse.
